Dead Things With Teeth is an album that, on paper, was never supposed to see the light of day. The two members of shrieking violet met online, living an ocean apart, to discuss nifty guitar sounds they could make. They each had unreleased songs that could've easily formed an EP. But as they kept working, the music kept growing, and they realized before long that the groundwork for an entire album had been laid out before them.
Influenced by industrial acts like Nine Inch Nails, shoegaze and post-punk like Have A Nice Life, and the experimental oddities of Xiu Xiu and The Body, the debut shrieking violet album is a difficult beast to tame. Every song has a firm grasp on its own dynamics, shifting between bone-cracking noise and melodic, ambient pieces. Dead Things With Teeth was created, not as a side project or an examination outside of the duo's comfort zones. It was created out of necessity, and it shows. Its lyrics are caked with self-hatred, seething anger, traumatic events, and fantasies fabricated by each member. In a time of need, the duo supported each other, and a monolithic piece was formed from this bond. It sounds greater than the sum of its parts, in both volume and its emotional impact.
